A confidential space to explore the thoughts, feelings and challenges in your life
My name is Rachel Purvis. I am a qualified Psychodynamic Counsellor and a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist in training. I am registered with the BACP, and am a student member of UKCP and AGIP (the Association of Group and Individual Psychotherapists).
I am able to offer counselling and psychotherapy to adults and older adolescents. Working to the BACP and UKCP Codes of Ethics, I also have an enhanced DBS and full professional indemnity insurance.
I work with people from all walks of life who are struggling with emotional or psychological difficulties, however they manifest.
Sessions take place in my consulting room in Bedford town centre.
I offer Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in a safe space where people can think about troubling emotional problems. I will not judge or advise, but instead, will listen to what you are saying, and perhaps what you are not saying, to understand the causes of present distress. We will work together, looking deeper into your problems and worries with the aim of bringing to the surface underlying issues and causes. These are often from the past, but continue to impact in the present. It is from identifying and thinking about these patterns and connections that you are likely to find some relief from your symptoms.
Over time, your therapy will enable you to think about what helps you, what doesn’t, and what changes you might want to make in your life. It can also help you to come to terms with what can’t be changed.
I offer an initial call during which we will discuss what has led you to seek therapy. Following this, you will usually be offered a face to face session. Occasionally I may suggest a referral to a different Psychotherapist. During this first meeting, we will talk in more depth about the issues and symptoms that you are experiencing, and also about your life and history.
Following this, a regular 50 minute session at a mutually convenient time can be arranged.
During your weekly session you will talk about whatever is going through your mind. This unstructured approach, which may feel unusual at first, helps you to become aware of patterns and connections in what you say or do.
People come to me for help with a wide range of issues. Here are a few of the more common difficulties that can be supported through psychotherapy:
Depression
Problems with confidence or self-esteem
Anger management
Issues relating to sexuality and gender
Difficulties at work or in retirement
Problems with family or school life
Feelings of stress or anxiety
Panic attacks
Relationship problems
Grief, loss or bereavement
Problems with addiction
Trauma and post-traumatic stress
My session fee is £55. I am also able to offer a limited number of low cost, long term psychotherapy spaces which may be twice or three times weekly.
